High Search Rankings Mean More Sales

An important part of any websites business plan is promotion. How are people going to find out about your website?

Unless you have the tens of thousands of dollars necessary to mount a large marketing campaign, or advertise in your local press, you will probably often rely on strangers visiting your website.

These strangers are all potential members or customers of your site, but getting them to your site in the first place is the all-important step.

When looking for information on the internet, most people will use a search engine to find what they are looking for.

Thus, gaining and retaining a high first page ranking in search engines for phrases related to the content of your site is a key step to gaining traffic, and ultimately sales.

Since the vast majority of websearches are conducted using one of the four major engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN & AOL) it is not important to have high rankings in the other smaller search engines, unless they are specific to your industry.

There are several ways you can go about getting a high ranking in the search engines. One method is to use Search Engine Optimization techniques to make your site friendly with the search engine 'spiders' which index the web. Another, more expensive, but effective way of getting a high ranking is to pay for a sponsored listing which will appear on top of, or to the side of ordinary search results.

Data Recovery Services

Data Recovery is the process of restoring data which has been damaged or deleted. When you 'delete' a file from your computer it normally remains in place until it has been written over by a new piece of data, however the user may be under the impression that the file is gone for good.

Data recovery software exists to help you retrieve recently deleted files, or older versions of files which have since been updated. There are also numerous data recovery agencies who use much more sophisticated software and hardware who will attempt to recover your lost data or files for a fee.

To reduce the need to call out these services you should ensure your PC has anti-virus & Firewall software to protect your data from intrusion. You should also ensure that your PC is free from spyware which can log your keystrokes, including passwords.

Important data should always be backed up, off site. It a document is not confidential but has taken a long time to write simply e-mailing the file to your self (& not deleting it!) will provide you with an additional place to get the data from, should your PC be rendered useless.

Windows Vista Ultimate will cost 499 Canadian dollars (about £240)

Upgrades are will be charged at half the full prices.

Microsoft said it will reveal US prices at the end of September.

Dual Core

There has been a lot of talk of so called 'Dual Core' processors recently - but what is all this fuss about?

A dual-core processor is two entirely independent processors (+ caches & cache controllers) which are built onto a single silicon chip.

Dual Core technology which has recently been pushed by Intel enables you to 'do more' at the same time with your computer.

However to take advantage of the full benefits of dual core technology you need software which is designed to utilize this new type of processor. Currently software that supports dual-core technology is limited, however Windows Vista (the predecessor to Windows XP SP2) will be able to utilize dual core processors.

Webmaster Income (2 of 2)

Different agencies will buy your traffic in a different manner.

Some such as the popular Google AdSense program pay you on a per-click basis. This means that for a publisher to earn money, visitors to the website must click on a contextual link to leave their webpage.

The amount paid per click varies depending on the keywords the advertisements are for and how much advertisers are prepared to pay.

Other forms of advertising payment include CPM (Cost Per Thousand Impressions). This means a webmaster gets paid each time ad is shown - although of course the rate varies depending on the size and placement of the ad and the traffic that sees the advertisements.

CPL (Cost Per Lead) and CPA (Cost Per Action or Acquisition) adverts only pay when a certain action is completed - for example a registration at a website, a download of software, a membership or a sale. Sometimes the pay rate for these types of advertisements will be in percentage terms, e.g. 20% of the sale price.

Webmaster Income (1 of 2)

As a webmaster you will want to recoup the costs of your hosting bill, and may want to cover the time you have spent on your website.

The most common way to do this is to place advertising on your webpage. Unless you own a huge site with hundreds of thousands of daily page views advertisers will not contact you.

Instead, thousands of webmasters of small and medium sized website are using agencies to provide them with sponsors to cover their hosting bill.

These agencies stike deals with major advertisers (and some small ones) and provide webmasters with codes to place in their HTML to display these adverts. The agency then pays a percentage of their income onto the webmaster who are displaying the ads (also known as publishers).

The most common types of advertising are contextual and graphical banner ads. In the past pop-ups were popular but nowadays most of these are blocked.

Protect your PC

If your PC is connection to the Internet or a network (it must be if you are reading this), then there are certain things you should ensure you have to protect your computer and keep your data and personal information safe.

1. A firewall - this prevents unauthorised access to your PC via ports.
2. Anti-virus software - this will scan files you download as well as your disk and will remove any viruses.
3. Anti-spyware software - this will find and remove programs which monitor your computer usage.

If you connect to the internet without protection it will not take long for your PC to become slow and responding.

Brush up on your skills

If you run a small business you may want to consider taking some educational courses to brush up on your ICT, business and financial management skills.
Adult learning facilities may be available at one of your local schools in the evening or you could take a short course at college. A relatively new choice is distance learning - where you study from home around your current commitments. This form of education online is popular as it reduces the need for education loans and enables you to study as an when you wish. Distance learning is by no means 'less' valuable than a going to a collage, indeed it is even possible to get distance learning degrees.

If you feel left-behind with the development of ICT a short refresher course may be for you where you can learn advance word-processing, spreadsheet and database skills which should help improve your business.

You may also wish to take some marketing or business education which will help with the day-to-day running of your business.

Two Top Google Tips

Here are some time-busting ways you can use Google for things other than your average search:

Did you know that you can use Google as a calculator?

Simply type in the sum as your search term, press search and the answer will appear - above the results of any sites with your sum on them. Example .

You can also use Google as a dictionary for scientific terms. Simple type 'Define:' before your keyword. Define: Keyword

Test your Popup Blocker

POPUP TEST provides a free and simple way to test your popup blocker software. The website will put your stopper to the test by launching a series of safe popups using a variety of different methods.

Most of these popups should be blocked if you are using Windows XP with ServicePack 2, as this included a popup blocker for Microsoft Internet Explorer. For added protection you can also install the free Google toolbar.

Other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, and K-Meleon feature built-in popup blockers. The popup blocker in Firefox is effective, however the K-Meleon one will try to stop all popups, even the ones you want to appear.

Popuptest also features reviews of software designed to stop popups, including many free popup blockers such as Hitware Popup Killer Lite and Smart Popup Blocker.

Staying Safe Online

Here are 4 quick tips to help you protect your privacy and identity online.

1. Never click on links in e-mails claiming to be from your bank, PayPal or eBay unless you have been expecting a mail. You can always access your account by typing in the URL of the website - if there is a problem with your account you will get a message there.

2. Always use different passwords for each website you are a member of.
If someone gets one of your passwords they will only have one, not a handful.

3. Check that you only enter your credit card details on a secure site - look for the padlock, grey-green protecting of the address bar in FireFox, and the https:// prefix to the web address.

4. Don’t believe what you read in your e-mails. Just because they are sent to your address does not mean they are true or genuine.

You can read more tips relating to staying safe online at my computer, business and internet blog.

Things to consider when choosing a webhost (part 2)

Once your website gets online you hope that it will become successful and receive large amounts of traffic. However you have to be sure to plan for this eventuality. Will you have to switch packages, servers or even web hosts?

Moving web hosts is not as scary as it may sound - providing the host you are switching to is competent.

If your current host is proving hard to get hold of, or if the service or price is poor - switch. The host you use can make a big difference on the future of your site.

A way to avoid this shopping around at a time when you should be doing something else, is to research carefully when you first pick your website. The big companies (i.e. 1&1, HostGator etc), aren't necessarily the best for all sites.

Some hosts specialist in hosting certain types of sites - these hosting providers will also be more readily available to help you with any other issues that may arise with your site or scripts.
